Investigating The Environment With Technology

Help me give my students two photogates and adapters to be able to use our collection of electronic sensors for physics and environmental science investigations using Chromebooks.

My Project

Several years ago, we obtained a diverse collection of Vernier electronic sensors, which students used with the school's old netbooks to explore environmental science. Chromebooks are the only supported technology, and our sensors cannot connect to them.

A vital component of our middle school science program is clearly showing students real-world applications of science concepts, particularly those related to the environment.

We need a couple of photogates to add to the labs we can conduct, and we hope that we will be able to use the sensors we have successfully with the requested adapters. If successful, in the future, we will try to obtain enough adapters to run investigations in lab groups rather than as a demo or single station.

We would love for our students to be able to use our existing sensors to measure the pH of water samples, how temperature affects dissolved oxygen, light intensity, and atmospheric changes that alter it, sound levels, and the voltage and current produced by solar and hydrogen fuel cells!

Today's science students are the future stewards of the environment. To solve the issues of the future, they will need to understand science concepts and how they work in the environment, be familiar with data analysis tools such as the accompanying graphical analysis software, use their creativity to devise solutions, and be able to use technology as tools to implement their visions. Students develop these skills by participating in hands-on investigations in science classes!
