My Project
The book "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America" by Barbara Ehrenreich represents and an important text for our Early College Experience Sociology class that will provide students with an unfiltered, immersive exploration of economic inequality and labor challenges in the United States. By examining Ehrenreich's firsthand journalistic investigation into low-wage work, students will gain profound insights into the systemic economic barriers faced by working-class Americans, developing a nuanced understanding of social mobility, economic struggle, and the often-invisible challenges of minimum wage employment.
My students will benefit tremendously from this text, as it offers a compelling narrative that bridges academic theory with real-world economic experiences.
The book's investigative approach will encourage critical thinking, empathy, and sociological analysis, allowing students to move beyond abstract economic concepts and connect with the lived experiences of workers struggling to survive on minimal wages. By reading Ehrenreich's classic book, students will develop a more complete understanding of economic inequality, labor rights, and intersectionality that shape individual opportunities in contemporary America.
My students collectively are an awesome group of students who take the early college experience very seriously. Many of them are first-generation students who will be the first to graduate high school in their family, with the opportunity to continue their education with post-secondary plans. They are enthralled with the world around them and are dedicated to their studies.
