This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My AP Biology students elect to enroll in an advanced science course for college credit as juniors or seniors. My students, most of whom will be first generation college students, are highly motivated for success! Enrollment in an AP science course is not required for graduation, but my students are motivated to go beyond the basic requirements in order to show their abilities and learn each day. My students want to be fully engaged in their learning and participate in hands-on activities.

My Project

This first lab in AP Biology helps students investigate Natural Selection based on the environmental conditions that can effect the viability of brine shrimp, commonly known as sea monkeys. The kit provides most of the needed materials for this activity that emphasizes scientific processes and statistical analysis.

Students will compare the salinity on viability of the brine shrimp and then design their own experiments to determine the effects of the environment on the population using the beakers for hatching populations.

This lab sets the pace and expectations for future lab activities in the AP Biology course so that students have the necessary skills and background knowledge for the remainder of the year.
