My Students

Have you ever been enthralled by a great story? How about one that is true and has deep social and historical impact on all our lives, but has been kept a secret? This is the kind of story that is important for engaging our young people.

In our diverse, urban school we have students with myriad talents who have a great desire to learn and develop skills academically to succeed.

A 9th grade English classroom can be an incredible place for exposing learners to social issues, debating different beliefs, and challenging notions of what is right and fair. We need great books to stimulate this level of thought and to look deeply at what it means to live in our society and our world.

My Project

In order to investigate how social inequality, scientific research, ethics and American history intersect, as a class we will be reading the biography "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot, on over 60 critics' Best Books of 2010 lists. We will learn about the incredible story of an African American woman, ill with cancer, whose cells were taken in 1951 (without permission) and used for research, forming the basis for leaps in science's understanding of genetics and continue to be grown for experiments today. At the same time her family--poor and from innercity Baltimore--was never notified and never received any compensation or voice in the use of Henrietta's cells.

In addition to reading a great book and a controversial story, learners will look at how the author Rebecca Skloot made her own journalistic journey over the course of ten years to research and bring this story to light.

Students need sparks to light their imagination, and models that show how dreams can be attained through perseverance and diligence. With your support our 9th grade English class can such a journey.
