While almost half of my students are on free and reduced lunch, that doesn't stop them from being highly creative. Our diverse school has over 2,000 students and many of those students visit the library as a creative outlet. Our library makerspace has allowed them to pursue passions and discover new inspirations for career paths. This year we are working on bringing making further into the curriculum by combining literacy and creation. Our students are highly engaged when being creative, so I am excited for this partnership and collaboration with ELA teachers.
My Project
Our students are embarking on their second year of Invention Literacy Research. One of our foundational goals in the library is to teach our students how the world works. Because of this, our freshmen English students will be researching how an invention works and creating their own iteration of that invention. Our students thrive with this type of highly creative maker research. Every student will choose and create their own invention mostly using and reusing recyclable materials. Therefore, we will need many different types of tools to make our project successful.
We hope to intrigue students who've never been exposed to sewing machines and power tools before.
By including these resources during our research, we are introducing tools for hands on learning that many of our students have never used before. By exposing them to these tools, we hope to inspire them to be more creative on a daily basis and even pursue and develop new maker interests.
One of the best things about giving our students these reusable resources is that we will be able to use them over and over again for many different maker-focused projects!
