For my students to be successful in language arts, they must be well-rounded in reading and writing. As a third grade in Florida, we've been heavily focused on the reading comprehension portion of the puzzle. To have them fourth grade-ready we need to focus more on writing for the rest of the year.
My students are a group of hard-working individuals who are part of a low economic suburban area.
They face troubles in their every day lives that many will not see in their entire childhood. Despite disadvantages, they are eager for every learning opportunity. They are deserving of the highest quality of education and I strive to provide that for them.
My third graders have been working so hard this year to improve their language, vocabulary, and comprehension as they prepared for their first year of state testing. As we wrap up our test preparation, we're switching gears and will spend the remainder of the year focusing in student writing. For my students to become good writers, they need to be exposed to good writing. The story, Frindle, by Andrew Clements is a great example of that. Through reading this story about a fifth grader who creates havoc by creating his own words, my students will be exposed to new vocabulary and figurative language. While reading, we will study how Andrew Clements incorporated various literary elements and use them to influence our own fiction writing pieces. After "publishing" final products, the students will create scripted scenes and have the opportunity to direct their own mini films using the digital camcorder. The students' stories and scenes will be showcased for the school in a publishing party.
Having the books and the camera will help the students immensely.
Being able to analyze a piece of text that is both rich and entertaining will provide a benchmark at which to measure themselves as writers. Then seeing their work come alive will show them a practical application of writing as well as how well their details transfer from their minds to paper to film.
