Invasive Species in Our Own Backyard

Help me give my students books and maps to learn about invasive species, and items to care for our African clawed frog.

My Project

In this project, I am requesting books and a map to learn more about invasive species around the world.

Learning will come alive when students will discover that their classroom pet, Freddie the Frog, is actually an invasive species on this continent!

African clawed frogs were first brought to the US for medical research. Soon, they were being kept as pets. These frogs can live to 25 years, so animals that have been released in ponds and lakes have gone on to hinder native species.

Freddie has lived in my classroom for 7 years. The bucket, pellets, siphon, and other materials will help students to connect the fun of caring for a class pet with real world responsibilities and the consequences of invasive species on the environment. Caring for Freddie will take on new meaning when they learn about other invasive species, including the Lamprey found in our own Lake Michigan. Kids don't study geography much these days: the world map will help kids connect the dots.
