Many of my students have never seen a real wood block press nor have they had the opportunity to experience any form of printmaking. I would like to inspire these students to see and new art materials beyond paint, pencils and clay.
My students are 6th, 7th and 8th graders.
They are a very diverse group of students, that consists of many religions, races, ethic backgrounds, and languages. My classes consist of mostly African American, Japanese, Chaldean, Hispanic, and white students. However, with 27 different languages spoken at my school I have very diverse classroom, with any students who are eager to learn.
My Project
These materials would be used by the students to create a printed design. After studying the printmaking art from many countries, such as Japan, The Netherlands, France and the US. Students would design, cut and print their own creation in multiple colors. The completed pieces would include three images that would be hung together.
The block printing press would open many doors for future projects like poster design, book prints, even clothing printing.
For this particular project I would like to introduce the students to many types of printmaking, in many cultures. However, not only would I be able to introduce the students to a new media or form of art. I would also be able to enhance the social studies curriculum by showing a true block printing press and the form of early printmaking.
