This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In 8th grade there are many standards that deal with chemistry. I would like to have the basic safe supplies to provide hands-on chemistry. Many rules and laws apply to chemistry today, therefore, I would like to get some of the basic supplies to keep it safe and yet give the students some experiences to take with them as they are getting ready to enter high school.
I will be teaching at Curtis Middle School this year, in the south Los Angeles area. Curtis Middle School is a school where many schools that are capped send their students if there is no room. The population changes from year to year. I also run the science club and science fair for the school.
I will be needing basic chemicals and some hardware that is needed to cover the basic chemical standards in 8th grade. I will probably have around 160 students and I do labs for the other classes also so I will probably see 1600 students at one time or another in the next year.
I believe that students learn more effectively when they have an experience to go with the information that will develop the inquiry skills needed for the future.
