This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I need my students to have hands-on realistic experiences in the anatomy classroom. They need to see the science -- look at a skeleton the same size as them as they visualize their bones and how they are built. They need to do the science-- try it out by seeing how to suture. Science is about doing as they learn how things work.
We are in a classroom with minimal supplies and a very limited budget.
Students still need the same opportunities to explore the topic. The Suture Practice Kit is essential as well. Suturing is a highlight with students as we move through the anatomy course. We first start practicing with bananas and move on to the skin models. This is a good task that gets students thinking about wounds and the amazing way our body heals.
A full-size skeleton is used as an introduction to an anatomy classroom, but also because it is a useful model in all aspects of the course. When we study the skeletal system, we analyze the different bone types. When we introduce forensic science concepts, we look at ways in which they identify remains based on the condition and types of bones. When we move on to dissections - even examining a chicken wing, students see they have many of the same bones that we do: humerus, ulna, and radius, and the shapes/structure can be identified and compared. When we study the reproductive system, we look at the pelvis and understand the difference in the pelvic shape of males and females when it comes to the delivery of a baby.
With close to 200 students the funding and support for this project is really essential.
