Introducing Students to Great Books

My students need 30 copies of Mary Higgin Clark's suspense novel "Where Are You Now?", to increase their motivation to read and enhance their reading comprehension.

My Students

I teach remedial reading classes to struggling 9th graders at an urban school in a low socioeconomic community. My students identify themselves as "non-readers". I want to introduce them to a classic suspense author, Mary Higgins Clark, as an attempt to get them reading!

My students desperately need high interest, well written literature.

My students love to read interesting, thought provoking literature where the characters are "real" - just like them. The characters need to have real-life issues where they can feel a connection. This suspense novel provides just that, they will love the suspense and itch each day to read it! I want a book that they just can't put down and this is definitely one!

My Project

With this book, my students will be better prepared for college and the world in which we live. I want them to increase their comprehension and discussion skills, as well as work on making meaning of the text. Students will also enjoy the chance to look at the suspense genre, and get the chance to write their own suspense thriller as a culminating activity.

They will increase their motivation, as well as their confidence in their own reading. I know that my students will enjoy this fun read and that they will love talking about it! Thank you!
