This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The culture of childhood that played outdoors is gone, and children's everyday life has definitely shifted indoors. This is especially true in the city mainly because of "the culture of fear" in urban areas. That is why I try to expose my students to the natural world, but I need some help.
I teach Pre-K to 18 wonderful children in the Bronx.
Most of the children come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and many are second language learners. In our school, 100% of the students receive free lunch. We are a large, urban school in New York City and many of the children come from families who are struggling financially. Our families value education and are excited when they see their children learning and being exposed to new things.
I have noticed that many students who are coming to school for the first time do not have a lot of prior knowledge when it comes to nature. Media, visual images, written language, are all important but so is the natural world. Little by little, we are all becoming disconnected from the natural world and are becoming estranged from our natural origins.
My Project
Wouldn't it be great if you and I and others out there could help young children fall in love with Mother Nature? Most children I know have an instinctual devotion to animals and nature. Unfortunately, most children are gradually educated away from the deep connection to living things and the natural world. All children should be taught that the world is interconnected and that all living things are part of the great circle of life as we all heard in the movie, The Lion King. Many children today, especially in urban areas, have limited contact with animals, and they struggle to develop a sense of kinship with living things.
I am interested in having a nature based program based out of the Green Meadow Farm to come to my classroom to put on an interactive and audience participatory performance using puppetry, drama, games, and story. They will also introduce the children to a dozen different animals such as a hedgehog, tortoise, frog, lizard, mice, rabbit, guinea pig, and a tarantula.
The children will use their five senses and be introduced to many different animals.
Thich Nhat Hanh once said, as a species, we will only survive if we able to restore our ancient and true awareness of a connected universe. With a little help from our friends, we can have the children experience this great show and a chance to meet animals up close.
