Proposal for Implementing "Into the Wild" in AP Language and Composition Classes
As an AP teacher at an at-risk public high school on the border of South Texas, I am requesting class sets of the book Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer for my 2 AP Language and Composition classes, totaling 40 copies, along with snacks to enhance the reading experience.
Introducing this book to my students, many of whom have not explored life outside South Texas, will provide them with a unique opportunity to delve into themes of adventure, self-discovery, and the pursuit of one's ideals. Into the Wild follows the journey of Chris McCandless, a young man who ventures into the Alaskan wilderness seeking meaning and authenticity.
By engaging with this text, students will not only be exposed to different perspectives and life experiences but will also have the chance to explore philosophical concepts such as stoicism and transcendentalism. These discussions will encourage critical thinking, empathy, and reflection, helping students to connect the themes of the book to their own lives and aspirations.
Investors are invited to support this proposal as it aims to broaden the horizons of students who may not have had the opportunity to explore beyond their immediate surroundings. Through the reading of Into the Wild, students will develop important literary analysis skills, empathy for diverse life paths, and an appreciation for nature and self-discovery.
Granting approval for this proposal will enable students to embark on a literary journey that not only enriches their academic experience but also nurtures their personal growth and understanding of the world around them.
