Interviews Ignite the Mind - First Grade Reporters
My students need 125 binding combs for the books that we make, card stock for the books, 30 lined elementary journals, 30 interview memo pads to take notes, and #2 pencils with erasers.
Would you like to meet a positive, inspirational reporter that is seven years old? I have 25 of them! Move over Diane Sawyer, my first graders are turning heads with their personal and professional interviews!
I am a first grade teacher in North Carolina. I teach at a K-2, inner city, Title 1 school with a diverse population, many of which are military connected.
To be a first grade teacher, you have to be somewhat like a Mary Poppins, and have many tricks up your sleeve to grab your students attention. Last year, I contributed around $500 of personal income for classroom materials to try and do this project. With the recent .5% annual deduction in state employees pay, it will make it more difficult to contribute to this project that the children love.
To successfully complete this writing project, we need several resources. We will need funding for steno pads that the students can use to take "interview notes", lined writing journals for their rough draft letters and final letters, binding for the guest's book, cardstock paper for the guest's book, and #2 pencils with erasers.
By interviewing, students grow tremendously as writer's. Your help will ensure that my students can appreciate others, develop a greater sense of diversity, realize that families are different, learn about cultural backgrounds, learn about ways people can be successful, and become appreciative of the things they have. This project supports growth in writing and reading. It builds confidence and self esteem. Your donation will make it possible for us to have the supplies that we need in order to commit ourselves fully to this project. It makes my day when I see a child feel successful about their writing and eager to share their story with others.
