My Students
"There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new- age technology, but if the teachers themselves are not able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails."
- Nancy Kassebaum, U.S. Senator.
Help me put technology into the hands of my first graders!!
The students in my first grade classroom are as diverse in academic levels as they are in culture.
Our Title 1, inner-city school is "home" to almost 1200 students with a multitude of ethnicities. There are over 30 languages spoken in our school. They attend school in a district where poverty is an issue and many don't get the extra support at home that is needed to be successful in school. Our district is also facing financial troubles and we aren't able to get the materials and resources needed to help our students. At six and seven years old, despite any hardships, they are very excited about learning new things!
My Project
Our school has been fortunate to obtain an incredible reading and language intervention program to be used school-wide. With our large English Language Learning community, this will prove to be invaluable. Unfortunately, with our large, and growing, student population coupled with our district's financial woes, our school is not able to purchase the number of computers, devices etc, needed to supply our students.
The iPad would provide my students with daily opportunities to use computer-based interventions as well as view books, hone phonics skills, practice math facts and research topics of interest. Students would also be able to work with a partner or small groups using this device. This is important to encourage team building skills early as they will find this to be useful through life. Through the use of the iPad, students would also be able to learn in a way that they are comfortable for them as it would reach all different learning styles.
I know the addition of an iPad would get many students even more excited about learning.
Often technology offered at school is the only technology available to our students. In our ever changing world, this would help better prepare them for the technological world we live in. I want nothing more than my students to feel success and learn any and every way they can. This iPad would provide them with countless advantages and, with hope, prepare them for a more successful future.
