Kind, strong, curious, resilient...these are all words I would use to describe my incoming students this year. I have watched them grow in our small school with the help of my amazing colleagues. Older students are "buddies" to younger students and because of this I have the opportunity to see students' growth even before "officially" being apart of my classroom. They all are readers, writers, engineers, historians, scientists and mathematicians. They arrive at school each day with a smile and handing out high-fives to all other students, ready to start the day.
I truly believe these are the children who are going to change our world.
I find myself inspired by these students who I am lucky enough to call "mine" this year. Starting the school year through a "comprehensive distance learning" model will be challenging for these students but I know they will embrace the challenge with a smile.
My Project
The materials for this project will be used to teach content that supports social emotional learning with stories that embrace diversity and inclusion.
Many books selected support the broader "#ISeeMe effort" which is supported by research that shows students benefit when they see themselves in their learning materials.
These stories encourage a growth mindset and inspire students to face hard challenges. Many stories and characters represent Black, Asian and Spanish heritage which is important for many students developing their identity.
These books will be used for whole-class read alouds, small group book studies and independent practice. The books will provide content and examples for great classroom discussions and projects whether we are in the classroom or online. Currently, many of our "classroom libraries" have been inherited and would greatly benefit from new high-quality literature.
