I want my students to LOVE to read. Reading is more than character traits, theme, main ideas, and synthesis. It is finding friendships, heroes, and lessons in your favorite series or your favorite author's books. It's about realizing that you are not alone. There are characters in books just like you. It's also about discovering how different people are. Allowing another's story about life change how you view the world around you. Reading is knowing that the answer to your question, your dream, or your goal is just one nonfiction book away. Reading is your best friend and your way to learn the most you can about the topics you feel most passionate about.
How can I cultivate a love of reading in my students?
Step one is to make sure I have books in my classroom that my students can fall in love with. It is my goal to stock my classroom with just right fiction and nonfiction books so that my students can fall in love with reading. What greater gift could I give them?
My Project
My students continue to become powerful readers. This is greatly in part to the books in my classroom that have come from the generous donors of DonorsChoose.org. Our next step is to grow a more powerful classroom library that directly connects to our reading curriculum.
My students need powerful, engaging books that provoke deep interpretation of the text and directly connect to our reading curriculum.
I teach using the TCRWP (Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project) Units Of Study by Lucy Calkins. Calkins and her colleagues have curated a collection of classroom library books that best support the units I teach. One of these units is called Interpretation Book Clubs. The books I am requesting were hand picked by TCRWP for this unit. I am confident that having these specific books will lift my students' learning during this unit to the next level. Most importantly, I think it will help cultivate their love of reading.
