My Students
How many young children have you met who can discuss the war abroad, natural disasters, international politicians? Well, Time for Kids is a magazine that exposes young minds to international topics and informs them of the issues.
My students are 8 year olds who attend a growing school in a changing community.
Our school building has gone through many changes and our school has been the one constant over the past few years. It is a public school that is centered around family and community. They are eager to learn about the world around them but most do receive exposure to the news at home.
My Project
Every week we read about international events and learn about specific countries which are spotlighted in a separate issue. The students are excited about reading, they encounter challenging words and challenging concepts. They begin to form opinions and ask insightful questions which is useful in setting them up as inquisitive individuals as they grow older.
Reading is such an important skill but loving reading is an important quality.
Time For Kids is able to interest every child at some point. They are drawn in by the photos and the topics. It is intrinsically motivating for them because they want to figure out how to navigate each issue. It builds a community where we can all have discussions about the same important topics. Every year I see strides of vocabulary improvement, reading interest rises and confidence in speaking because of TFK.
