My students need high interest low-level books to read.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Negele's classroom raised $586

My Students
By middle school and certainly high school, it is expected that students "read to learn" rather than learn to read. Unfortunately, many of my 10th grade students are reading far below grade level and struggling across the curriculum as a result.
I teach Special Education in an all girls, Title I high school.
That means more than 70% of our students qualify for free lunch. We strive to provide a safe, welcoming environment for our girls through partnerships with non-profits that allow us to work on improving our students' well-being and sense of self. The staff at our school is like a second family for our girls and we strive to help them in as many ways as possible.
My Project
We are extremely fortunate to have texts that are on grade level for general education students to read but there are few books for my 10th grade students who are reading at 2nd grade to 6th grade reading levels.
My students will use these book to improve their reading levels. Our school allows students to choose what they want to read across the curriculum. I chose a wide variety of books that girls will want to read in English as well as in Social Studies. In addition, to simply reading, they will use these books to support their writing. They will be able to write responses to prompts using texts that are on their level.
This project will give my students access to books they can read independently.
This will help improve my students sense of self and help them to believe they are capable of learning and achieving success. Hopefully, it will help them fall in love with reading!
