This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The last school year was so challenging for all our students. We operated on a hybrid model where the students only attended school every other day and were required to complete schoolwork at home on their "beyond the building" day. Some students were completely distance learning. Everyone struggled with this.

My kids are now back in school and learning in a new normal that requires them to wear masks at all times inside the building but my diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they have.

Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, with limited resources available. I want to help alleviate this. Our school, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program. Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey.

My Project

We currently use FOSS Next Generation Science Kits to teach science to our sixth-grade students. We only have a class set of 32 textbooks for each topic that need to be shared with more than 90 students. This doesn't really work since the Pandemic has forced us not share items. It is also helpful to have this digital access to the textbook since we have a lot of students excluded from school either due to exposure or showing symptoms of Covid. This allows them to continue to participate in the class even when they are not at school. Students use the science text book to integrate information presented in different media or formats (e.g., visually, quantitatively) as well as in words to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue ELA RI6.7. They are also required to write scientific explanations and will use the text to trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by reasons and evidence from claims that are not ELA RI6.8

This premium access textbook will allow students to look at the textbook, access videos that go along with the reading, have the text read to them, and take notes online that will be saved each time they open up their eBook.

In a way, this lets each student have their "own" copy of the textbook where they can read it themselves, or if the student has a reading disability, the text can be read to them. We also have a lot of students that are being excluded from school due to illness this year and this will let them have access to the textbook at home. This license will be good for 7 years of access.
