This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a class for children with severe and profound mental and physical disabilities. The children range in age from 6 to 8 and come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. The students disabilities include cerebral palsy, epilepsy, low vision, speech impairments, and low hearing levels. Some are non-ambulatory, and all require maximum assistance from others for self care and day to day living.
This is a new classroom, and we do not have a lot of materials. Reading and storytelling is one of the most important and interesting parts of a child's' education. I love to read stories, and having interactive puppets, and characters from the books makes them more exciting and also gives the students a chance to participate in the storytelling process.
Interactive children books with characters that can be put on a board or glove will increase the effectiveness of reading instruction in my class. The children can not only listen to a story being told and see the characters from the story, but they can also help to tell the story by placing the characters on a board. This will give the students a true sense of involvement and connection to the storytelling process.
With your help, you will make it possible for the students in my class to truly be a part of the reading and story telling process. They will have the opportunity to not only hear, but see and tough the characters in the story.
