I work with a wide spectrum of students who have varying abilities of autism. They learn at different speeds and rates compared to their neuro-typical peers. I have found, along with research, that students with autism learn best by doing and interacting with their learning materials, which provide them opportunities to make connections through their learning style.
My students come to school each day ready to learn, have memorable experiences and hoping to have their voices and actions accepted by their teachers and neuro-typical peers.
Every day we work on building a safe environment where everyone is accepted, engaged in learning, and learning how to interact with others. Each and every day I am amazed by their abilities and their growth in academics, social development, and of course their humor!
This project really makes me excited for my students' literacy needs. The book totes will be used to take books home during the week to share with their families and to practice reading.
We have a new reading library that I would like my students to access with us at school, as well as their parents.
I am excited for the students to intrinsically come to love reading at school and at home with their families.
The Let's Talk Storytelling puppets will help our reading through common and known stories like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs, and The Three Billy Goats. I plan to use the kits to practice different ways to tell these fairy tell stories. I also plan to use The Very Hungry Caterpillar storytelling kit to enhance our reading skills and to practice telling the story using their voice.
This project is hands on learning for my students to learn while doing in different ways to make reading a fun experience for the students as well as the teachers.
