Help me give my students Interactive journals that are packed with a huge variety of hands-on activities to help students grasp and master standards-based skills by building a visual journal that reinforces key concepts.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students are creative, clever, and very spontaneous.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and their growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I certainly can control their experiences during the school day. I am hoping to inspire our earliest learners to continue on a path toward academic excellence.
My Project
My project includes interactive phonics journals. These will make an impact on my students because they will be engaged in their learning. Since many of my students speak more than one language with the majority being English Language Learners, it will meet each child's learning style, whether visual (spatial-using pictures or images), physical (kinesthetic, using hands or sense of touch), aural (auditory-using sounds), verbal (linguistic-using words, both in speech and writing), social (interpersonal-learning in groups or with other people, solitary (intrapersonal, working alone or use self-study), or logical (mathematical-using logic, reasoning and systems). They will be able to use these skills to become successful Learners. Each child will keep their journals in his or her book bin to use in a large group, small group, one-on-one, or with a partner. They will be able to take these journals home to share with their parents to promote school-home interactive learning.
