Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a science teacher in a Title I school district, 91% of the student body is Hispanic and their families are migrant workers and work on the farms that surround the community. Out of the 400 students, there are 120 students who are 9th graders who are starting their first year of high school. Out of this 9th grade class, 85% of the students are English language learners, which means that English is not their home language.
These students' families are low-income with a high poverty rate.
My students have seven different classes that they attend to every day. Earth and space science is one of those classes and varies from 25 to 27 students in each class. Even though these students face many challenges, I try to provide them with fun and engaging lessons that will help them outside of the classroom.
Even though these students do not have much, they make the most out of what is given to them. They have pride in their heritage and hold deeply on to it. They want to do well in school, so that they can better not only their lives, but also their families.
My Project
The copy paper will be used for making copies for students. Having copies allows each student to be able to have their own copy of the task at hand. If each student is not able to have their own copy, then classroom time is used on students having to handwrite a copy of the material. By being able to make each student their own copy, we have more time for students to be able to do engaging activities.
Interactive notebooks are a great way to get students engaged in their learning.
The copy paper will help with being able to provide students different types of graphic organizers and foldables that students can make and glue into their interactive notebooks. Color paper is fun for students to add some different colors to their notebooks. This is why it is important to be able to provide students with their own copies.
