Help me give my students composition books and paper to learn executive functioning skills and organize their notes in an engaging way to help them understand the content we're learning.
I teach high school math to students who come from very diverse backgrounds. Our school has students who face a lot of challenges, from violence in their neighborhoods to homelessness. Teachers at our school work hard to challenge students to reach their potential while providing a safe place to learn.
My students are eager to learn, but definitely, need support and encouragement in mathematics.
Students bring a wide variety of interests and experiences into the classroom and are excited to learn. However, at times they question their own ability to succeed due to the challenges they have already faced in their young lives.
Our school has a number of students who are homeless and more than a third of our students are from households that qualify as low-income. We're a diverse school with students from many different backgrounds. Most of my students have struggled in math and it is very common for students to tell me they hate math or can't do something in math early in the year.
My students all struggle with math and get discouraged easier. I have created a variety of games and activities to engage them and this will be my second year using interactive notebooks.
My Project
I use interactive notebooks in my Algebra 1 and Geometry classes. Using colorful foldables help students stay organized and learn how to take notes. These notes help students "own" their understanding, as research has shown students writing their notes in an interactive notebook help students understand the material at a deeper level.
My students come into my class at the beginning of the year with little confidence in their math abilities.
Students benefit from being able to use their interactive notebook as a resource. I love seeing my students go back to their notebooks to answer questions they have about the material. I've noted a real difference since I started using these interactive notebooks and the colorful paper helps make it more engaging to students.
