Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a special education center in the Los Angeles area and work with students who have multiple, severe disabilities. My students face significant physical and cognitive disabilities that make learning very difficult and struggle with understanding basic math concepts such as counting, number recognition, and quantity. I would like to purchase more math manipulative objects that are appropriate and safe for my students to use so that they can better interact with our math lessons and progress in their understanding of what we're working on.
My Project
The students in my classroom have significant disabilities that can impede their learning. Because of this, they need hands-on, functional learning opportunities so that they can understand concepts more readily. Hands-on materials such as these math manipulatives will allow them to interact with the lessons in new ways so that they are more able to comprehend new concepts. Many of these materials are tactile in nature so that students with visual impairment will be able to use them to identify numbers, shapes, and quantities and, therefore, participate more fully in our lessons.
