My students need hands-on, engaging activities, paint, construction paper, brushes, and gear clocks to allow them to grasp the literacy concepts needed to build a good foundation for the rest of their
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a very low socio-economic area, with very little resources to engage them in learning. I want them to leave my classroom motivated and excited about learning, so they can carry that with them forever.
The students that make up my classroom are 99% low income and at risk for dropping out before finishing high-school.
They are students who have not been given the resources or motivation for academic success. There is very little literacy provided at home. They are precious children who are willing to learn, if only given the opportunity.
My Project
Work stations are particularly important because students are engaged in visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning. The stations offer children the opportunity to explore freely from a variety of learning experiences. It also allows them some time to relax and enjoy learning with peers. Additionally, work stations allow for choice; this choice allows children to work at their own instructional level. These resources are going to benefit my studentâÂ's ability to reach that level of mastery for phonemic awareness. These materials will also be introduced into our Literacy Work Stations after the children have had a chance to use them to build their reading fluency and blends. My students will learn to manipulate letters, words, sounds, and to build their skills as both readers and writers. An example of a new game we have been playing during our small group time is a word family game/rhyming game. It is teaching the students to learn how to rhyme with visual pictures.
