This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

While lesson planning for 6th grade Math and Science, I couldn't help but wonder what other resource I can use to make the current curriculum less boring and more interactive and interesting for the students. I wanted to change their perspective on how they viewed Math and Science, which was mostly negative-- a difficult subject or a subject they were not good at, nor confident with.

The first unit for Science introduces Engineering and Science, and their daily curriculum was to read and regurgitate information into a workbook.

I knew this was only going to reinforce their dislike or hatred towards the subject. I wanted to teach the subject and have the students learn it through firsthand experience because that's what Science is--learning about the world around them.

With the requested items, we can build and design simple machines and have them test their prototypes, letting them become student engineers. We can also create model cells, animal cells and plant cells, to help them learn all the parts of a cell as they create them and label them. From experience, repetition of words and visually creating something helps us to retain the information long term. I still remember the mighty mitochondria as the power source of all cells.

With the donation for TPT resources, I can purchase already-made, fun and interactive lessons that have been created by other teachers. Incorporating different types of lessons, other than "textbook lessons", makes learning more fun and interesting.

I would love to provide my students various ways of learning Math and Science so that they can have a different, more positive perspective on the subject and become more open-minded to learn it and develop a growth mindset for learning.
