My Students

I have 150 motivated students who want to learn about different technologies and careers in my STEM Lab. For many, this is their first time being able to learn about coding, robotics, and programs such as Photoshop. Many of the students come from a low socioeconomic background, with limited resources available. S.M.S., built-in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program.

My sixth, seventh, and eighth grade STEM students are eager to learn and pursue careers in STEM.

The students are wonderful and eager to learn. Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and peers, but I am privileged to serve students from all the teams in my STEM classes. Our school is home to a diverse group of young people all striving to do the best they can with the materials they are given.

My Project

The new school year in August will be challenging for so many reasons. We have no idea what school is going to look like when we get to go back into our physical school buildings, so I just want to make sure that the students don't need to worry about basic supplies. My students will use these composition notebooks to record their STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) projects that they work on throughout the semester. This notebook will allow them to plan out their work on graph paper and keep everything together so that they can access their notes in the future.

One of the biggest challenges my students have faced during distance learning is not having a notebook to use to take notes that they can refer back to later on.

These notebooks will help build the foundation of science, technology, engineering, and math concepts and keep track of their projects. These interactive notebooks will allow all of my students to have ownership of their work and help them become scientists, engineers, artists, and mathematicians.
