My students need 30 copies of the amazing, captivating author Walter Dean Meyer's latest novel, "Sunrise over Fallujah".

My Students

I teach at an urban school where I have four classes of 9th graders who describe themselves as "non-readers". They require high interest young adult literature to engage them in discussions and reading.

My school is in an urban area where many come from a low economic background.

Many of my students have experienced difficulties becoming interested in reading and count the material as the biggest hurdle to overcome. I would love to present them with this novel because it is sure to engage them in interaction with the text.

My Project

With this text, my students will work on their reading comprehension and connections to text. Students need to interact with the text, not just read the words on the page. Based on various activities and discussions, students will be allowed to do just that. This book is based on men and women in the army in 2003 shipped to Iraq. It details their conflicts, inner and outer, and will allow my students not only to learn about the world in which we live, but also about themselves. We will conduct research on the current military action as well as focus on volunteer opportunities we can do to reach out to soldiers abroad, like sending supplies/letters, raising money, etc. It will be a great experience.

This will be a fabulous life experience for my students.

Not only will they read, engage and enjoy a text, they will also try to help out the world in which they live by donating time and effort to soldiers abroad. Thank you so much for the chance to give my students this opportunity!
