Today whether you are a teacher or a student, if you do not have access to a computer in the classroom you are working at a disadvantage.

I teach English Language Learners from lower socioeconomic and many diverse cultural backgrounds.

Some do not have computers at home or they need help in how to use the technology more effectively. Students' families, however, all want their children to work hard and be successful. Parents ensure that their children get to school early for a class that helps them learn English.

My Project

A computer could help my students' learning in a variety of ways. Because our school library is in transition, students need to check out books online. Many of my students could do this before class with my support if we had a computer for them to use. They could learn to browse the site for just right books that are of high interest. They could become familiar with the online public library site. During English language lessons a computer could get hooked up to the document camera for displaying visuals, necessary for students to more fully understand concepts and vocabulary. When assigned research reports in science and social studies, I could walk students through how to use the computer to access information. With a computer, students could learn how to access sites that boost reading and English skills. Having my own computer will help me access data on students, write up reports for parents and teachers about students, and facilitate communication to improve reading instruction.

A computer is needed for teachers to plan engaging lessons.

The computer can provide images for limited English students in the classroom to more fully understand topics. Students also need to learn how to effectively navigate a computer to develop reading and English language skills. If students became comfortable with the public library's website, they would have opportunities to interactively follow along with books read aloud.
