My Students
My students want to make a difference! Many of my students are the first generation born in the United States. They do not have much in financial means but are big in heart, and they have a fantastic work ethic! They also want to help and contribute to our community and society!
They attend a public school in an ethnically diverse neighborhood.
Their parents range in age from their early 20’s to their mid-40’s and vary significantly in their education level. Many of my students and their parents speak languages other than English, with little to no fluency. There is a broad range in my students’ academic abilities, skills, and interests, yet they are very supportive of one another. These young learners are fun to be with and enjoy taking responsibility for their learning.
My Project
Great books often serve as a passport or an "escape" into a world of imagination. During these unforeseen and challenging times for students and families, it's more important than ever to share stories that can help them take a break from the world around them.
Our students often have limited resources at home, and literature usually takes a backseat.
To keep my students motivated and enthusiastic about learning, they need engaging books that we can read, share, and discuss together. Being able to hold an actual book rather than merely listening to it aloud or through a computer screen will allow them to activate deeper meaning and understanding for readers. These fantastic stories will facilitate grade-level language standards that can easily be woven into engaging, shared novels.
The authors I have chosen, Lynne Jonell and Lisa McMann, are beloved storytellers whose writing often inspires students to continue reading more.
