Integration of STEM With the Aid of 3D Printing

Help me give my students inspiration to pursue their interest in science by providing opportunities to support their understanding of scientific concepts through the use of 3D models that are student focused and student generated.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As I enjoy my 14th year in education as a middle school science teacher, I am constantly looking for ways to increase student engagement and provide students with authentic learning experiences to strengthen my students’ understanding of complex scientific concepts. One of my goals to achieve this is to provide hands-on activities to support our curriculum, which at times, tends to emphasize interactions with complex texts with few opportunities to incorporate lab activities or the use of art. Being able to transform a lesson with the use of 3D modeling in the form of a 3D printed object may help bridge connections to concepts that may otherwise continue to be abstract or challenging for students that benefit from a multimodal learning approach.

3D printing is not only the future, but is also an amazing way to take what is conceptualized mentally and transform it into a form that is tangible and real.

It is my belief that the use of a 3D printer will provide opportunities for students, especially those with specific learning disabilities and varying levels of EL acquisition to form connections to the concepts we explore as a class. Simultaneously, 3D printing may also provide extension opportunities for students at or above standard to support their growing curiosity and mastery of NGSS standards.

I am asking the community to fund our project specifically because we have amazing students from a community that does not always have the same opportunities as communities spread across our county. Over the course of 3 months, I have had the opportunity to work with a Teaching Candidate from SDSU has generously provided our students with his personal 3D printer. Watching students interact with the objects we have created, even on a very small scale and with outdated technology, has been rewarding and inspiring.
