Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In 5th grade, we read the book, The Whipping Boy. This year, I would like to give my students an opportunity to integrate performing arts into their learning by having them write a short play after reading a specific scene or chapter of the book.
I am currently teaching 33 5th grade students in a low income neighborhood in Southern California.
Although my students face many challenges in the neighborhood in which they live, they seem to enjoy the refuge that school provides them each day. Most of the students are second language learners and did not speak English when they started in school 6 years ago.
My Project
After we first learn what Reader's Theater is by practicing with some already written plays, I would then like for the students to be given time to read a chapter and write their own Reader's Theater on Google Docs. For each scene, I will have the students use the Post-It notes to make notations about the scene they will create. The students will work collaboratively on their own reader's theater, print it out, and eventually present it to the class. We have a small stage in the library that can be reserved for such an occasion, and I think that the students will be excited about working together to creatively re-create a scene from the story we are reading!
This will be a first for most of my students, so I am hoping that it gives them a way to express their creativity and realize that books can really "come alive!" It is not just about quizzes, vocabulary tests, and quick writes!
With the support of Lily, Sarah, Grace and any other generous donors, we can make this integrated project happen! Thank you.
