"I don't use technology in my classroom because it's a buzzword or trend. I use it because connecting my kids with the world will prepare them for the future." -Unknown
This project will serve approximately 60 Pre-kindergarten students ranging in age from 3-5 years including students with special needs.
Our programs goal is to better prepare our students as they enter into their elementary years of school. As a rural school, we are an integral part of our community. Receiving these funds will allow us to start introducing our students to educational technology during our center time. These skills that they will learn will follow them for the rest of their education and into their chosen careers.
State data has shown that our at-risk population continues to be behind other school district’s populations when comparing test scores in reading and math. We feel that increasing our students’ access to technology will provide them with more engaging opportunities for practice with immediate feedback. This is a crucial step in developing our students to become successful readers and mathematicians.
My Project
During our day, we have an hour block for center time. These 12 centers are focused around hands-on activities that reach students in a way that they learn (auditory-listening, tactile-touch, kinesthetic-movement, and visual-sight). Currently in our technology center, our 3 year olds are not able to use the Smart Board that is in their class as it is not developmentally appropriate for their size. They need something that will fit into their hands. In our 4 year old classroom, the Smart Board is used but we are limited to what we can do because of the amount of sound given from the websites and many get frustrated when they can't get the board to do what they want.
Putting iPads in the hands of our students opens a huge door for them. Students will learn using more than one style on iPad. Students will see, hear, move, and touch as they go. Students can work on letters, numbers, shapes or go the creative route and make a book with their illustrations and record their voice telling the story.
Through iPad play or "work," we will also begin teaching them about digital citizenship as well, a much needed skill in today's world.
Everything our students do will leave a digital footprint so learning to be responsible should be taught at an earlier age. More and more careers are also heavily based around technology so starting our students on the right path must begin earlier.
