Integrating Slumberkins in a Preschool Classroom for Enhanced Social-Emotional Learning
Help me give my students the tools they need to navigate their emotions and challenges through the use of Slumberkins, fostering coping skills and resilience in our social-emotional learning activities.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where students come from diverse backgrounds, including some who are homeless or have experienced abuse, loss, and instability. Discussing such profound issues with Preschoolers can be challenging to approach in a way that's suitable for their age. I intend to use Slumberkins as a tool to help address these tough emotions, ranging from severe circumstances to everyday conflicts that arise during the school day. Slumberkins are designed to nurture caring, confident, and resilient children.
The need for social-emotional education in our classrooms is more pressing than ever.
We are witnessing an increase in destructive behavior and severe emotional outbursts. As educators, we must prioritize social and emotional well-being and develop coping skills before we can focus on academic learning. Many students enter my classroom burdened with trauma. Slumberkins offer a way to teach essential life skills such as dealing with loss, embracing self-acceptance, and resolving conflicts through their stories and accompanying stuffed animals, which help children connect to and understand these topics.
I plan to integrate Slumberkins into our classroom in various ways. I will create a dedicated space where the Slumberkins reside. For immediate behavior redirection, I can guide a student to our "calm down" corner to engage with a relevant Slumberkin and share its story. Additionally, if I learn about specific issues affecting a child's home life, such as divorce or relocation, I can use a Slumberkin to initiate a private conversation and teach appropriate coping mechanisms. I also aim to incorporate them into group discussions to enhance our social-emotional curriculum.
