Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a wonderful class of first graders this year. They are bright, kind, and eager to learn. Their reading levels range from kindergarten to second grade. Two of the girls are sisters to students I've had in previous years, and I am constantly mixing their names up. It's also funny to see how alike and different they are.

We are a Title 1 school, which means most students that attend our school live at or below the poverty level.

The students in my class span a range of English speaking levels, from pre-emergent to proficient.

My Project

We have social studies textbooks that were printed in 1993. Although they are old, they still have a lot of good information and sections that meet our state standards. However, there are not enough copies for each student, so if we read them together students have to share. It would be nice to use Scholastic News Magazine to better support the social studies curriculum with current affairs and seasonal biographies.

My class does not have any science textbooks.

Using Scholastic News Magazine will give the students a common text to read and then use for academic conversations. As a teacher it is nice because it comes with lesson ideas and tips. Another bonus is that it has an electronic version which can be used on the Smart Board. When I used it in previous years, students answered questions about what they read in the magazine game show style. They had so much fun.
