Integrating Music and Movement With Literacy!

I need to learn more about integrating the arts and literacy in order to provide engaging learning experiences for my youngest learners in Kindergarten and First Grade! I need to attend the Emily Arrow Teacher Summit.

My Students

I teach approximately 160 students in grades Kindergarten and First Grade (4 classes of each) in the library every week. Our school is a K-5 Title I school in Helena, Montana. 47% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. These young learners come from a variety of backgrounds and they have diverse learning styles, but they are all eager to learn and explore the library.

My students are engaged in their learning the most when we use music and movement in the library!

This year we have tried a yoga storytime, complete with songs, stories, and active participation. I've noticed this has helped create an atmosphere that is calm and motivating.

My Project

Emily Arrow is an expert in music and literacy for young learners. By attending her teacher summit, I will learn more effective ways to provide engaging learning experiences for the youngest learners in my elementary school library.

Music and movement motivate my young learners and help our stories come alive!

Research proves that music increases literacy rates and comprehension and is especially effective with hesitant readers.

As part of the summit, I will receive educator resources that include 20+ Common Core lesson plans that integrate music. I will also learn the fundamentals of ukulele and ways to use an instrument for both instruction and classroom management.
