Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Why do leaves fall off trees and how do they get back on?" This is only one of the many questions my inquisitive first graders ask on a daily basis. My students have limited opportunities to explore the world around them. Therefore, I want to bring those opportunities to them through literature.
My first grade students attend an urban public school in Massachusetts.
At only six and seven years old, my students overcome daily hurdles, such as poverty, language difficulties, and broken homes, in order to do what they love most- learn! Their zest for learning and love for life despite their challenges serves as a constant inspiration to me.
My Project
My students have a particular love for learning about science and social studies. I often find that nonfiction literature fosters a love of reading in all of my students, even those who struggle to read. However, it continues to be a struggle for me to find grade-level text that taps into those interests. The book sets I have requested would be a perfect fit for my classroom and my students. They would provide my students with grade-appropriate literature that would expand my students knowledge and curiosity about topics aligned with our standards.
In addition, the individual greenhouses and science journals would provide my students with the opportunity to apply some of what they have learned from their reading. My first graders are visual and tactile learners who learn best by doing and seeing. The greenhouses would provide my students with the unique opportunity to see science in action, which is something they are often unable to do at home.
As a first grade teacher, one of my ultimate goals each year is to create a community of readers.
When my students have access to books that interest them, they develop a love for reading. These reading materials would provide my students with literature they will love to read and will want to learn more about. The greenhouses will foster learning as well as self-confidence, as my students complete a project all on their own. Thank you for all your help in building a community of learners!
