Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you ever hold the tambourine during choir or shake the maracas in a concert? That is the fun I would like for some of my chorus students to feel during concerts. Of course, we will also share the instruments with the band department.
My students are low-income, high-poverty students that live in nearby Project Housing.
They are good-minded children who are just looking for an outlet to express themselves and I try to offer that opportunity through song in my classroom.
My Project
Instruments are a really fun, kinesthetic way to learn how to sing, read, and even appreciate music. Ideally, students will be engaged even more than they already are during the chorus class. Always having an instrument to help students learn to keep a steady beat is helpful in any music classroom. A child may crave to keep rhythm with a tambourine or be the drummer for our Black History Month Concert with the talking drum. We will be able to use the maracas, guiro, and claves at our upcoming Hispanic Heritage Concert in November '11.
Having instruments may help the most "non-singer" find an outlet within the chorus concert.
Not everyone that is in chorus has the best ability to sing but EVERYONE deserves a chance to be in chorus - in percussion, behind the scenes, or as a singer.
