This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach music to Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade students in a high need, urban school district. In our school, 98% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. We have been working very hard to develop programs to help students expand their minds and their horizons.
Most of our students are unable to afford to participate in music lessons outside of school. My students come to music class one or two days a week. Their favorite activity is to play our classroom instruments in the many musical compositions we play. When I accepted the position at my school, the music program had very few instruments. I am trying to build and expand the program. Unfortunately due to budget cuts, our school is unable to purchase new equipment for the music program.
Our students are visual, hands on learners. The addition of temple blocks, a gong and a suspended cymbal will allow me to engage more of my students in the instrumental activities they all enjoy so much. In music class we often work together to make up sound tracks to books and poems. With the addition of this effect percussion, you will help me bring the music to life.
Your donation will help to ensure that I am able to offer my students a quality musical experience. By donating to our project you are not only investing in the community, you are investing in the future. Please help me to bring these instruments to our hands on learners.
