My Students
My middle school scholars are a group of diverse 6-8th graders from Detroit who are eager to learn and uphold the standards of music education. Since the first day I arrived, students were eager to follow my lead as they learned to read, write, and perform instrumental music.
Over 50 students performed in the very first winter concert we had in 2019 with the little equipment that was available for us to use at the time.
My students look forward to rehearsals and performances as their form of social-emotional learning (SEL). They display discipline, respect, effort, and organization daily as they work on polishing and improving their overall instrumental music performance that will eventually lead to receiving scholarships for college.
My Project
My middle school scholars are fixated and yearn to be challenged during our music lessons but are limited to the lack of equipment and supplies we recently have. Our lessons have been focusing on applying the basic elements of music to instrumental performance. The young musicians in my class are taught to display discipline, respect, effort, and organization daily as these life skills will increase their chances of being successful even without having all of the necessary supplies needed at the moment.
The music instruments and supplies will be used for hybrid instruction during the pandemic.
Students will be able to receive quality face-to-face and virtual music lessons while engaging in reading, writing, and performing music. During face-to-face instruction, the mellophones and marching baritones will be used during marching band practice, rehearsals, and performances. The concert band version of these instruments is not designed for standing, marching, and moving while performing. The marching instruments will help students perform comfortably indoors and outdoors for athletic events, parades, and Battle of the Bands Competitions. Alto saxophones and clarinets will use the reeds to produce sound from their instruments. Reeds are fragile and can be damaged easily so they have to be replaced often. The bell covers will be used to prevent the spread of aerosols as students blow air through their instruments. The bell covers will trap the aerosols and prevent them from releasing into the air and spreading the coronavirus. The conductor score books will be used to align all lessons with the Michigan State Standards of Music Education. The materials requested will grant my students the opportunity to be challenged while engaging in applying the elements of music to their instrumental performance.
