The choral program not only is a "soft place to land" for many students, but also a creative outlet and a venue for achieving excellence!
My school is the most diverse high school in the state, with many high need, low socioeconomic students.
We are an 80% free/reduced lunch school and considered by some as the "inner-city school" of the Martinsburg area. My choral groups are as equally diverse.
My students are incredibly motivated and talented, in spite of many challenges, to be as successful as they are. Students participate in fundraising to attend competition trips, for which we have won regional and national titles. More importantly, the students are longing for more, they have the talent and the work ethic to do continue to excel! Lastly, you won't find a more grateful, supportive, and passionate "family" of students and parents!
My Project
For students to progress at performance art, they have to be able to see themselves! Feedback needs to be instant and frequent for kids to get the most out of it- and a video recording allows students to critique themselves and see the progress they have made! For the last five years, the show choir has been using my old personal video camera for all rehearsals, performances, and honor ensemble submissions. The poor camera finally kicked the bucket at the end of this school year. We used this camera far more than I realized- from documenting new choreography to creating final senior video projects, this camera was an indispensable resource. The camera listed in this grant is right for us because it comes with an exterior microphone (so the kids can hear themselves singing/playing in better quality) and a wide lens (so that every kid can be seen on stage.)
These kids work harder than any group of students I know, and they need some equipment to help them do it!
Our show choir has class on our auditorium stage because the choir room is the size of a small regular classroom. Dance captains teach choreography to students and are often having to raise their voice to be heard. These headset mics would help preserve the kids' voices while allowing them to face the dance mirrors and demonstrate. I myself would like to use a headset mic when teaching to help save my voice over a three-hour rehearsal after eight hours of teaching. This would allow me to be hands-free and demonstrate while speaking or singing.
Please consider donating even a small amount to us-- this project would completely change the way our show choir learns and allow us to excel to a new level of performance!
