My Students
Almost all of the students in our Dual Language classes speak Spanish at home and are perfecting their language skills to become fully biliterate. Others have been in the program since kindergarten or preschool. They speak English, Spanish, Garifuna and Mam at home, and have learned Spanish at school. In our classes, we focus on literacy skills and U.S. history content.
Social justice and approaching history from many perspectives is at the forefront of our discussions, activities and lessons.
In our Dual Language classrooms, we strive to celebrate the diverse identities and backgrounds of all students in our class. At our school, many students are survivors of trauma in their lives. This means that all our instruction comes from a trauma-informed approach. We work hard to push our students to try new things, while doing so within a safe and supportive space.
My Project
For the past year and a half, I have taught my amazing bilingual 8th graders their Dual Language U.S. History and Spanish Literacy classes online. While there is a LOT I didn't like, there are some very important skills and techniques I learned. One is to continue using programs that allow me to see students' responses in real time, but without the proper technology, I will only be able to use these programs from my computer station.
Having an iPad will allow me use the strengths of in-person teaching and also utilize the skills I have learned from teaching online to give my students immediate feedback on their learning.
I can walk around the room, giving feedback and answering questions like I always have, but with the advantage of seeing students' progress in real time. On one screen, I can monitor the work of my whole class. This allows me to better strategize how to support my students. I can decide quickly when to address a misunderstanding with one student, or with the whole class. It will give students immediate feedback on their learning, which is research-based as the most effective way to support student learning.
Imagine being in a classroom where your teacher can see you and your classmates are struggling with a concept, without having to read through individual paper exit tickets and get back to you the next day. Instead, I can read student responses and give feedback to the whole class or individuals as needed. It will also help me to maximize student participation by anonymously sharing a strong student response in real time, or helping students to think through a complex issue using both written and oral responses.
