INSPIRING the Love of Chess in Giant Moves

My students need chess timers, a large rug and giant chess pieces for incentive for our players, while also encouraging physical activity within the classroom.

My Students

My students are intellectually gifted students within a low-income school district. With about 143 students in the program, we strive to promote excellence, perseverance, teamwork, and provide real world experiences.

My dream is to take my students' interest in chess and create a love for the game that will last throughout their lives.

My group of students consist of very critical thinkers who love to think outside the box. I am amazed at how quickly they picked up the game and their eagerness to constantly learn more.

I believe that with this donation, they will grow to appreciate the game even more, and become more successful problem solvers in their everyday life. With the ever evolving technological world, I strive to educate my students with classic and effective strategy techniques that have been around for generations.

My Project

I just cannot express how important chess can be within the life of a child. Studies show that children who play chess tend to score higher on achievement tests versus those who do not play. They learn many valuable skills such as sportsmanship, strategy, critical thinking etc. Now that my students have developed a better understanding of chess, I would like the opportunity to use the chess timers to create more of a challenge for them. They will quickly learn how to move in a time efficient matter using the strategies they have been taught within the classroom and developed through personal experience.

My mission is to break the stereotype of athletic players versus chess players and help students come to the realization that you can be involved in both teams!

Also, with the giant chess board and pieces, I would love to integrate chess into physical education. Students will have to physically lift and move the chess pieces which will have a major impact on my kinesthetic learners while also promoting teamwork within the classroom. This will be very unique approach to chess that will make the game even more active and exciting for everyone. They will be able to not only use this set within the gifted classroom but also at recess, fundraisers, etc.
