My Students

What do you get when you cross 5th grade, 4th grade, 3rd grade, 2nd grade, 1st grade and K? Reading Interventions!! Our classroom is a bustling zone of learning for all ages. Our students come from a variety of socioeconomic statuses and races including Native Americans from our local reservation. During a typical day we help ninety kids on their journey of learning how to read.

Our kids work hard, play hard, and laugh hard.

For example, today one of our little kindergartners was delighted to find that instead of spelling dad, he'd spelled bob. Whoops! Giggle, Giggle! Meanwhile at another table, our fifth graders are working on the vocabulary for Call It Courage. Have you ever tried to pronounce words in a language not your own? Well, these kids worked hard to decode the plentiful vowels in this Polynesian inspired book.

Our students know they struggle with reading, but keep coming back and we are so proud of the efforts they make to become better readers.

My Project

Our reading intervention room needs a tier 3 reading program for students that do not meet Special Education requirements, but need a program designed to fill in the gaps from Covid, dyslexia, and other learner problems. We will be using the Sounds Sensible kit with our Kindergarten and First grade students. The decodable readers will be used with our 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders who also need intensive support.

A well designed program like SPIRE will not only make a difference with this year's students, but with many more to come.
