Inspiring Reading and Critical Thinking Through Graphic Novels
Help me give my students a set of graphic novels for our classroom library to make reading more accessible for ENL students and students with learning disabilities

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Each week, students have time in class to "Drop Everything And Read." Graphic novels are a tremendously popular format of books among our students. In my two ELA classes, we have English as a New Language (ENL) students and students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Many of the ENL students are newcomers with limited English proficiency, and some of our students are struggling readers. Despite these challenges, they are always trying their best during independent reading.
Graphic novels allow a broad spectrum of students to connect to the English language and generate high interest levels through multimodal literacy engagement.
Graphic novels keep students’ attention through visuals and pacing. While short on text, many are rich in complexity. They guide connections between words and images, provide a deeper understanding of the storyline, and support students at various points in their reading development. In addition, students are able to make inferences and learn about symbolism, characterization, and other literary devices.
A new collection of graphic novels would provide more variety to our classroom library, support students of different reading levels and interests, and create positive reading experiences for all.
