My Students
I teach in a diverse, Title I school in a suburb of Washington, DC. Preschool is often the children's first time being away from their parents, so I strive to make it a fun and engaging environment.
My preschool class includes two, three, four, and five-year-olds with special needs as well as a few typically developing peer models.
The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down Syndrome, blindness, autism, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and language disorders. I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally and linguistically diverse families and many face socio-economic challenges.
My Project
Our curriculum spends six weeks focusing on trees. My students enjoy this unit, but need additional books and materials to help make their learning more meaningful. During our study of trees, we take lots of nature walks and look at real trees in our community. Books about trees will enrich these walks since we will be able to name the trees we see in our neighborhood. Other books will make our classroom library so much richer. The children can also use the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom tree to work on retelling stories.
We will use blocks and manipulatives to enhance our pretend play and block areas for our tree study.
Small trees can be used when building a city from blocks; we could even construct our neighborhood! My students love building so the wooden blocks and parts will be an exciting addition to our building area.
New games will be so exciting for my class. We use board games to work on social skills and language development. I cannot wait to play Honey Bee Tree with my little learners- they will surely love it!
