Inspiring Kids in BlueSTEM Through Aquariums!

Help me give my students their own aquatic ecosystem in the classroom. We will use this aquarium to teach water testing methods and healthy sustainable ecosystems. By creating an aquarium for our classroom we can help engage students!

My Students

Mission Bay High School is a unique school in San Diego California. We are striving to create an inclusive classroom environment focused on experiential scientific learning. Our school is focused around one of our planet's most valuable resources, water!

In our BlueSTEM pathway, we are encouraging students to become global science citizens focused on preserving our precious ocean ecosystem.

We are a Title 1 school with a diverse student population representing both our neighboorhood and greater San Diego area. Many of our students spend over an hour on the bus to get to our school to take advantage of our IB program and BlueSTEM pathway. The school hopes to provide opportunities to students to train them in real-world job skills as well as academic knowledge.

My Project

Creating a classroom aquarium system will provide our students with an opportunity to learn about water quality and healthy ecosystems. The filtration systems and heaters will help to simulate warm water freshwater ecosystems. They can use this aquarium to compare water quality levels such as nitrate, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, and chlorine content.

Students can apply the phenomena that they see happening in their aquarium to real-world problems.

Even though our students live in a coastal community they have minimal knowledge of what actually happens in an aquatic ecosystem. This project will help my students become more productive scientific citizens as they learn about their own ecosystem.
