Inspiring Independence, Ingenuity, and Individuality!
Help me give my students the opportunity to master their own learning by choosing flexible seat options to focus on their work as well as the ability to self-monitor noise levels.
My students are the BEST! Doesn't every teacher think that? But of course I am right! My 6th grade kiddos are at that age where they are young enough to still be excited about learning and old enough to start envisioning their futures; we work on goal setting and the tools needed to reach those goals.
I work at a Title I school which means the majority are low-income students.
However, that doesn't mean low ability or ambition. I have had a mixture of students that includes special needs, gifted, English language learners, ADHD (medicated and more often, not), as well as typical students. Most recently my classroom consisted of high-needs, trauma-based students.
Our school is a 'school of choice' which means we are not a traditional neighborhood school. Families choose our public, free, charter school for various reasons; often the reason is that their child did not experience success in the traditional public school settings, was victimized by bullies, or is at risk of dropping out. Our school focuses on HOW a child learns and then makes every attempt to teach them in that way. As a teacher, I am NOT satisfied by the 'one size fits most' style.
My Project
I have been using flexible seating in my classroom for a few years; unfortunately, garage-sale finds don't hold up to the daily use from students. I have selected a conversion bench for partner work as well as a rocking chair more suited to the classroom environment (this was a highly requested item by students!).
Independence is so incredibly important to the educational and emotional growth of students!
By giving them choices in their seat options, as well as the ability to choose board games such as Fact or Opinion and Geodice when their assignments are completed, I'm giving them the opportunity to manage their own learning. I also have been attempting to have students self-regulate the noise level in the classroom; the Yacker Tracker will give me the ability to do just that.
In addition to independence, I also feel it is vital for students to develop good team work dynamics and communication. I will use the Answer Buzzers to create teams for fun learning opportunities.
I also am requesting a few items to help create a positive learning environment; a diffuser to help with focus (and it's shaped like a volcano so it can be used during our Rock Cycle unit!), a Growth Mindset book to help me guide my students in thinking positively, and multi-cultural crayons so EVERY ONE of my students has a choice to make their self portraits and character studies look more like themselves.
